HOW TO CHOOSE A SECTIONAL YOU`LL LOVE FOR A LONG TIME

In furniture lineups, a sectional is something of an MVP—most valuable piece, if you will. Not only are sectionals versatile in style and configuration, but they’re often also ridiculously comfortable.

A neutral sectional can be one of the most functional elements of a space, whether it’s just you and the fam or a room filled with guests. And they can set the stage for nearly any aesthetic, whether you’re all about clean minimalism or whimsical boho-chic. Here’s everything you need to know to choose your perfect neutral sectional (and design around it).

DETERMINE YOUR LAYOUT

Not all sectionals are created equal, and the one you choose should correspond with the size of your space—from the big family home to a smaller apartment or condo. “Measure, measure, measure!” advises interior designer Georgia Tapert Howe. “[There’s] nothing worse than a sectional that is way too big for the room. Don’t force a sectional [that] does not work for the space.”

You’ll also need to factor in orientation. With many L-shaped sectionals, you’ll have the option of right-oriented (where the chaise seat extends out at the right side) or left-oriented (where the chaise extends out at the left side). Ideally, the “access side” (or the open space) should be facing the entryway or the TV to keep the room from feeling closed off.

PRIORITIZE COMFORT

For max comfort, look for deep cushions that provides plenty of space to cuddle up, and aim for at least 24 inches in depth. The Designer Looks Plush Modular Sectional (at American Signature Furniture) features down- and feather-filled cushions with a whopping 30-inch seat depth. (The contemporary Ethan Sectional also makes for a cozy choice, with its 28-inch seat depth and high-density foam core cushions.)

Speaking of fillings, Howe tends to opt for foam wrapped in down to balance substance and style: “It’s super comfortable but doesn’t look messy,” she says.

GET STRATEGIC WITH FABRIC AND COLOR

The surface fabric you choose can also impact overall comfiness, and is worth weighing in terms of look, durability, and versatility, too. A stain-resistant fabric that’s easy to maintain will make upkeep much easier than a trickier fabric like velvet. A few options that can stand up to everyday use include soft-to-the-touch polyester blends and chenille, as well as cotton, linen, and synthetic microfiber (faux suede).

Next up, consider colorDepending on your design aesthetic, white can feel modern or beachy—that said, spills and stains can make it hard to keep it looking bright, but that's where a stain-resistant fabric can be a life-saver. In addition to white, soft beiges and grays can help open up a room, which in turn gives them a light and airy feel. If you’re concerned about upkeep, a charcoal gray can hide daily wear and tear.

Along with the Plush and Ethan sectionals, Designer Looks Winston style comes in more than 30 color and fabric combinations. Ultimately when it comes to color choice, Howe advises, “Go with what you like!”

STYLE THE SURROUNDING SPACE

A neutral sectional allows your room’s look to go in plenty of directions, and no matter what your style is, pillows are an easy place to start. “Personally, I’d keep the pillows fairly neutral but in really soft, cozy fabrics, like a bouclé or alpaca,” says Howe. “Maybe a subtle pattern if you want to introduce a little interest.” Think: a minimal, Moroccan-style black-on-white diamond design.

Same goes for the floor—a textured area rug with a similarly low-key pattern provides visual interest, balancing out the sectional’s solid mass. Consider adding a tufted ottoman as extra seating, a place to put your feet up, and a pop of color. In lieu of a coffee table, pair it with a large decorative tray that’s can hold drinks, magazines, popcorn, and an attractive candle or two.

One final (and essential) addition: “Of course, you have to have a few cozy blankets for everyone,” says Howe. A chunky cable knit is the perfect finishing touch to your new favorite space.
